A bit sturdier (the shelves do not appear to be warping under the weight of books) than the small Billy Bookcase by IKEA and with a useful extra shelf - most bookcases of this height (+/- 30") have only one middle shelf. In its standard layout with three shelves of apparently equal height (they can be adjusted) the shelves are 9", 9.5", and 8.25" clear so there's a little less flexibility in arranging books than you think at first. If you make one of the shelves taller, then you'll end up with two remaining shelves so small that they're good for horizontally laid books, or very small books placed vertically - once again less flexibility than you planned for. This however is a result of the overall shelf height - which works really well for us because we needed to locate it under a window blind. Most shelves are taller, for example the Billy is 42"+/- but that includes the trim at the bottom. Finally, be prepared to ask for replacements if the unit arrives with cracked pieces. Despite the apparently sturdy packaging - one of the three units we ordered (one earlier from Amazon and then two from separate resellers via Amazon) had a cracked outer piece. That company was very efficient and sent us an entire replacement while we asked for only the cracked piece to be replaced (very nice but a waste of resources). Turns out the replacement unit also has a damaged piece (the same outer piece in the package) so we are able to assemble a full unit, and are now trying to figure out whether we can salvage a fourth unit.
